Overzicht

Montgomery, Alabama 1955. Miriam Thompson behoort tot de betere klasse. Ze vult haar leven met feestjes, lunches en bridgepartijtjes en vindt het normaal om bediend te worden. De zwarte Odessa Cotter kent ook haar plaats, zowel bij de Thompsons als in de maatschappij: zij is huishoudster, trots, intelligent, maar berust in haar lot als bediende.
